Q & A

There is an excerpt from the novel which inspired this film at: http://www.bookbrowse.com/excerpts/index.cfm/book_number/2236/Q&A-Slumdog-Millionaire

  1. I think that the excerpt is really interesting because we can see more into Mo (Jamal)'s thoughts. It also shows a more tender and childish side to Salim than the movie cares to show. It has the same format as the movie where it jumps back and forth from past to present and shows how Mo (Jamal) is able to answer the questions. It can also show why Salim started helping the gangster: he grew up worshipping the action hero who as a child he sees as always being the hero, fighting, carrying guns, surrounded by girls...etc.

  2. Terra basically summed this one up... but I agree. This shows Jamals inner thoughts and gives us a better idea of what his personality is like in contrast to his brother Salim who seems to be obsessed with this movie star/hero. This hero is essentially his role model and as we know from watching the movie, Salim falls into the same life style as his childhood mentor/hero. This excerpt is also very differnt that most texts. It shows Salim's chilish side and almost more "innocent' or unselfish side that we don't really get to see until the end of the movie. Throughout the movie Salim constantly thinks of only himself, his profits, and what benefits him. He takes a complete 180 turn when he allows Latika to go chase her lover and he essentially offers up his life for the betterment of two people. This event is very unique in my mind and is not nesecarilly for-shadowed in the movie but in the end the decision is respected by Latika and correspondinly or rather subsonciously; Jamal respects it too.
